A Legendary Angus Sire Has Passed Away

January 3, 2014

Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ashland, Kan., has announced the passing of GAR Predestined. The 14-year-old Angus sire earned enormous industry acceptance and is one of the all-time top semen selling beef bulls at Select Sires.

A sort, using the American Angus Association Sire Evaluation Report, for every bull in the Angus breed with a 90 percent or higher accuracy for marbling returns four sires—GAR Predestined and three others—from a database of over 17.5 million head. Predestined is a direct descendent of two of the three—B/R New Design 036 and N Bar Emulation EXT.

To date, more than 265,000 units of Predestined semen have been sold through Select Sires. As of January 1, 2014, 36,649 of his progeny have been registered at the American Angus Association. Predestined progeny account for more than 21,597 birth weight records; 22,274 weaning weights; 12,906 yearling weights and 646 carcass records. The average ultrasound %IMF ratio on more than 21,720 progeny is 106 with an average RE ratio of 101 and more than 8,930 daughters with weaning data recorded.

Arguably, Predestined advanced the genetic marbling capacity of the Angus breed more than any bull in modern Angus history. At 14 years of age, Predestined still ranks in the top 1% of the Angus breed for marbling (+1.39/.91), $QG and $B, top 2% for $G, and top 3% for $W.

GAR Predestined was retired from service at Select Sires and returned to the ranch in 2012. Since returning to the ranch, he comfortably roamed the pastures at Gardiner Angus Ranch in southwest Kansas. Ranch visitors familiar with the Angus breed routinely requested a stop to see Predestined.

“Every great bull will breed himself obsolete” is a long-held adage among cow-calf producers. It is a rare exception when a sire remains industry relevant for more than a decade. Predestined's large, positive hoof print will be valued in the beef industry for many years to come.

Predestined was buried in a special location on the ranch appropriate for his stature in the beef industry.
